President's Newsletter - June 2008

Welcome to summer and hopefully some well deserved vacation. It seems that our year just got off the ground and we are already thinking about nominations for next year. What a year it has been. Our March 2008 meeting focused on Positives & Pitfalls of “Never Events.” This was the 2nd year that CSHRM co-organized a program with the Connecticut Association of Healthcare Quality. In May CSHRM was host to the 18th Annual New England Regional Healthcare Risk Management Conference at Foxwoods Resort and Casino. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Massachusetts and Northern New England chapters of the Societies of Healthcare Risk Management. Throughout the conference local and national speakers presented timely topics such as a Primer for new risk managers, a Catastrophic Event, a Mock Cross Examination, Physician Channeling Program in a Captive, EMTALA, Claims Management, Physician Office Practice, Credentialing and Peer Review and a Federal Fraud Case to name a few. All received rave reviews. Sponsors and Vendors were available throughout the conference, as well as sponsored networking and entertainment. On a more personal note, I just want to thank and congratulate all of you who were involved in one capacity or another. Your foresight, commitment and perseverance helped make this conference unbelievably successful and couldn’t have been accomplished without the expertise and support of teamwork. Next year’s regional conference, hosted by the Massachusetts chapter will be held in Cape Cod, MA.

So far, our year has been filled with much energy and enthusiasm with our newly organized education committee, as well as our website that continues to grow. We have several programs in various stages of planning as we continue to “raise the bar” and strive for meeting and exceeding our members’ expectations. We also celebrate a first in our chapter as we move towards the “ green movement” and make our presentations accessible to all of our members prior to our meetings. Our June18th meeting will feature John Costa, Esq. who will discuss “The Lost Chance for Recovery Doctrine in Connecticut; A Critical Aspect of Proximate Cause.” In addition, in celebration of National Healthcare Risk Management Week, CSHRM will host ASHRM’s audio conference “ Finding Safety in Numbers; How Data Can Help Reduce Risks”.

As we move into fall, our September speaker Maria Vanderlaan, Esq. will present Insurance Precautions, Perils and Issues. Don’t forget to mark your calendar and make your plans to attend the ASHRM Conference on October 2-5 in Boston, MA. Congratulations to our members Pauline Barry, Fay Rozovsky and Melanie Osley who have been selected to speak on a variety of timely risk management topics. CSHRM would also like to extend our congratulations to Fay Rozovsky, a member of the Board of Directors who was recently honored at Providence College, her alma mater with an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Health.

As I have mentioned in my previous newsletter, this is your society to recommend topics, express your opinions and to get involved. We have various committees including education, legislative, annual conference planning and mentoring, as well as others to partake. Our chapter continues to grow and be successful as a result of your commitment and active participation. Let a board member know of your interest for a board or committee position. For further information and a list of meeting dates, check out the rest of our website.

Sincerely,

Patricia GaNun
President
